Is Removing the ChatGPT Watermark Legal?

OpenAI's Terms of Use, Section 3(b), assigns you full ownership of the images you generate ("you own all Input and Output"). C2PA metadata is not a license condition — removing it does not breach the Terms, and there is no DMCA or copyright claim attached to invisible provenance data.

What you cannot do

• Claim a ChatGPT image is a real photograph in a context where that matters legally (court evidence, news, insurance claims).
• Use generated images of real, identifiable people in defamatory or misleading ways.
• Violate platform-specific disclosure rules (Meta, X, TikTok require AI disclosure on certain content).
